Travel Packing Checklists Cruise Ship Family Vacation

7-Day Cruise Checklist

What to pack for a cruise?

Cruises are great for seeing lots of new places without the hassle of organizing all the travel in between.  However, the combination of warm day activities and heavily air-conditioned dinners challenge even the most efficient packer.  Here are some extras to pack for a 7-day cruise, or you can check out our full PDF checklist here. Skip to the end if you’re just interested in the list!

Documents

Nearly every cruise goes into international waters, meaning you’ll need your passport for most stops. Also, depending on your citizenship and destination, you may need to plan ahead for visas or other documentation. With several regional viruses causing problems, you may need vaccines before departure and the paperwork to prove them. Don’t get stuck on the ship and make sure you have everything required for entry to every stop.

Onboard Extras

Formal Evenings

Most 7-day cruises have two formal evenings, so you’ll want to pack accordingly. For men, this means a suit; you can generally get away without the tie unless you’re feeling fancy. Women, I would recommend a wrinkle-free dress or two. Sundresses and sport coats will pass, but likely get you some looks. I’ve seen full on ball gowns on cruises so while not necessary to go full on black tie, it might be a fun excuse if you’re looking for it.

Wine

While nearly all food is included in the price of a cruise, the same cannot be said for drinks. Some cruises may have a drink package, but even that is extra, and of course, the price of individual drinks might be higher than elsewhere considering you’re trapped in their floating restaurant with no alternatives. However, many cruise lines allow passengers to bring a few bottles of wine per (adult) person. Check your policy and plan ahead if you’d like more reasonable prices for your dinner wine.

Things you won’t need

Toiletries

Just like a hotel, cruise ships will provide the basic toiletries you need for day to day use. This means shampoo, conditioner, and soap. Anything else you might need, definitely pack ahead. You’ll be able to buy anything you forgot onboard, but don’t be surprised when it’s more expensive.

Towels

The absolute last thing you’ll need to bring for a cruise is towels. You’ll have pools towels, bath towels, and even towels in the shape of a swan provided for you. Resist the urge to pack your own beach towels and just borrow pool towels for the occasion, you won’t be the only ones.
